ISRIB, Institute for the encouragement of Scientific Research and Innovation of Brussels

ISRIB, which was instituted by the Brussels decree of 26 June 2003, began its activites on 1st July 2004. The mission of the Institute is to promote, support and valorize scientific research and technological innovation in the Brussels-Capital Region.
 
This task consists principally in funding research projects undertaken within the companies, the universities and the higher education institutes located in the Region.
 
 
With respect to profit-oriented research, ISRIB:
  • provides financial support, either in the form of subsidies or of refundable deposits, which it awards to SMEs and large companies for industrial research and precompetitive development projects,
  • funds technical  feasibilit studies carried out prior to the realization of industrial research or pre-competitive projects,
  • contributes to the expenses for the filing and the maintenance of patents for projects originally funded by the Region,
  • funds within universities programmes which aim at the launching of economically viable activities in the Region.
 
With respect to non-profit-oriented-research, ISRIB provides financial support to researchers active in two programmes :
  • "Research in Brussels" which enables foreign researchers to work at universities and higher education institutes in the Brussels-Capital Region, either as PhD researchers or lecturers who are on sabbatical, for a duration of 3 to 12 months, in order to realize projects presenting a specific interest for the Region.
  • "Prospective Research for Brussels" which supports PhD students or graduated researchers working on projects contributing to the reflexion regarding the specific development of the Brussels-Capital Region.
